Kidney service earns 1st ever #1 ranking or the eighth consecutive year, BWH and MGH have again been named two of the nation's best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report in its annual honor roll of hospitals. BWH ranked eighth and MGH ranked third. They remain the only New England hospitals to make the prestigious Top 10 listing. This year also marked the addition of a new category for Nephrology/Kidney Disease services which BWH took the number one ranking. In addition, BWH continued to rank in the top 10 in six other specialties including Gynecology at 3rd; Endocrinology and Rheumatology both at 4th; Cardiology at 6th; Pulmonary/Respiratory Disease at 9th; and Neurology/Neurosurgery at 10th. Five other BWH services ranked in the top 25: Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Orthopedics, Urology, and Cancer. This year 1,701 hospitals were eligible for U.S. News ranking. Those hospitals were ranked according to a formula that equally weighs three measures of quality care: reputation, mortality, and a group of additional factors such as technology, procedure volume, and nursing care. Reputation is determined by a random survey of 150 board-certified specialists in each field who are asked to name the five hospitals in their specialty that they consider the best, ignoring location and expense. The mortality score is a ratio comparing the number of actual deaths with the number expected, taking severity of condition into account. Information for the third category came from annual surveys by the American Hospital Association of its members. The issue of U.S. News and World Report ranking the country’s hospitals will be on the newsstand on Monday, July 10. The information also will be available online at www.usnews.com. BWH Bulletin will provide more information in an upcoming special issue celebrating this outstanding recognition.
